Brufen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to alleviate pain and swelling (inflammation). It is effective for treating headaches, muscle pain, back pain, dental discomfort, menstrual cramps, arthritis, and sports injuries. Additionally, Brufen helps to lower fever and relieve minor aches and pains associated with the common cold or flu. The way ibuprofen works is by inhibiting the enzyme in your body responsible for producing prostaglandins. Reducing prostaglandins aids in diminishing pain, swelling, and fever.
For minor aches, mild to moderate pain, menstrual cramps, and fever, the recommended adult dosage is 200 or 400 mg every 4 to 6 hours. For arthritis, the usual dosage is 300 to 800 mg taken 3 or 4 times a day. Under a doctor's supervision, the maximum allowable dose of Brufen is 3.2 g per day. Otherwise, the limit is 1.2 g daily. Patients should not take Brufen for longer than 10 days for pain relief or more than 3 days for fever unless prescribed by a physician.
For children aged 6 months to 12 years, the typical dosage is 5-10 mg/kg of Brufen every 6-8 hours for pain and fever management, with a maximum dose of 40 mg/kg per day. Juvenile arthritis is treated with 20 to 40 mg/kg/day, divided into 3-4 doses. It is advised to take Brufen with food to minimize stomach irritation.
The most frequently reported side effects of Brufen include rash, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and heartburn.
